Personalized bricks honoring veterans are on sale to fund Davenport Veterans Memorial Park

Quad City Times - 5/26/2024

May 26—Phase III of Davenport'sVeterans Memorial Park has begun with the selling of personalized memorial bricks for veterans, each of which will be placed in a special display area that will be built at the park.

Money made from the Memorial Bricks Project will go to ensure the future care and enhancement of the park.

Each brick costs $100 and is a 4-inch by 8-inch brick that will honor and remember a member of the United States Armed Forces.

The veteran's name, rank, when they served, unit, and service insignia can be on the brick.

Each brick is red, and all letters will be capitalized in black.

Commemorative bricks may be purchased through May 31, 2025. Each brick will be safely stored until construction of the display area, Phase III of the park's enhancements is completed. "We're taking brick orders this year, and we'll see the start of installation next summer," said Bill Churchill, president of the Friends of Veterans Memorial Park, which has raised money and worked with the city on its construction.

Churchill said that plans for the structure where the bricks will be displayed must be approved by Davenport City staff before construction can begin.

"We're raising the funds now so we can build it," Churchill added.

Phase I and II of the park, located on Davenport'sMississippi River Trail adjacent to the Marquette Street boat ramp, were completed last year. The phases included the placement of a mural honoring all branches of the military, a statue of a bugler, and a walking path along which are 14 stands with informational signs that have information on the wars and the area's veterans who served in the different branches.

The park was dedicated in November.
