Rich Miller, commander at the Legion post, also helped to honor Johnson.

Johnson served in the U.S Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in several countries including Germany and France.

“We’ve got to celebrate our patriots in this country and those who have stepped up to serve,” said Hinson. “When I look at the corporal, I think it is incredibly meaningful and a good opportunity to remind our next generation of that selfless service and sacrifice.”

Hinson speaking

Representative Hinson spoke at Corporal Johnson's ceremony.

Hinson also took time to acknowledge the bills she’s helped write or sponsor to support veterans across the country like the Sergeant Ketchum Rural Veterans Mental Health Act, and the PACT Act, a law that expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances.

For Hinson, supporting veterans “transcends politics.”

Miller gave some history about the ribbon Johnson was honored with, whose origins go back to the Korean War. “This ribbon goes to those who stand up to serve. You signed a blank check to be cashed up to your life,” said Miller.

Waverly wasn’t Hinson’s only stop Friday. She also hosted a roundtable at the University of Northern Iowa’s Business and Community Service building regarding food security in Iowa. “The main goal is to have conversations about these programs and what we can do at the federal level to alleviate some of these stressors,” she said.

Hinson also made stops in Dubuque at the National Mississippi River Museum, and for a ribbon cutting at the Buchanan County Emergency Operation Center, for which she helped secure funding.

Hinson is on the ballot for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District seat in November, which she’s held since 2021.
